The fall of 2009 had weather conditions that have not allowed the farmers to harvest their corn. We've seen many large fields of corn still standing when we traveled to Ottertail County this fall. Johnnie said that the corn may have to stay in the fields until spring. I loved corn fields as a child. Imagination could transform rows of corn into wonderful times of play. Sometimes I would pretend to be a general and the corn was my army. I would stomp along the outside row shouting orders and inspecting the "troops". One of daddies rules was that us kids could never go into a cornfield because you could get lost and it was hard to find you again. When Eisenhower was running for president I would pretend that I was running for president and I would go down the outside row of corn shaking the corn cobs and saying "Vote for me". I would give speeches too. But when I cut my hand on a sharp corn leaf I knew that I had lost the election to Eisenhower. Sometimes I would be the New Young Queen Elizabeth and the corn was my adoring subjects. Anyway today I'll feature some of our corn pictures of the past. This past week (Oct 6-9) cousin John and Annette Farrell came from Indiana to Minnesota for a visit with Mary, Johnnie and I. We had a wonderful time as their last visit to Minnesota was in 1966. They brought pictures from their collection and Phil scanned them on the computer so we now have 85 more amazing pictures to share on the weekly mailing. The weather was unseasonably cool and now we have snow on the ground and 27 degrees. John and Annette headed out for Indiana on early Friday morning and Saturday morning we woke up to two inches of snow and 25 degrees. Yikes!!!! September 30th is our dear daddy Al "Wishy" Gerber's birthday. He would have been 98 years old, of course he is in heaven now. Daddy loved hunting and fishing in all the seasons of Minnesota. He especially enjoyed sharing hunting and fishing adventures with his father-in-law John "Pops" Hoffmann. We miss daddy and mama and all those wonderful people who are in heaven now. Yesterday, September 19th was Phillip Estrem's birthday. He is now an amazing 67 years old. Most of Phil's old photo's are either in the Estrem, (Phil's dad's side) or the Martin, (Phil's mom's side) picture collection in Phil's photo bucket site. This is a photo that was shown on KSTP television. I believe it was honoring the 100 anniversary of an ice cream association. Phil's mom worked at the drug store directly across from the KSTP studios and she volunteered Phil for the photo shot that was taken and used. Phil and his ice cream cone. It's one of my favorites.

Here are three pictures from September 1951. Mama captured the Steinbach brothers who were carpenters from Illinois. They loved fishing and would vacation in Minnesota in the summer. They drove a Studebaker car that looked like a rocket ship. Picture #1: is Henry and John Steinbach with their fish. They fished almost every evening and would freeze fish to take home to Illinois. In order to transport the fish they had to leave the heads on the fish.

Photo #4: is a bit of a mystery. We believe it is a photo of grown up Helen and Katherine and their mother Katherine Gerber. Maybe someone can help us with this one?? Lorly Schik commented the following: I am not sure about the picture with the three ladies either. That pic is in with the pictures I just received. But I am sure that is not Helen and Kathryn with Aunt Kate. My guess would be that it is Aunt Kate with two of her sisters, sisters, or, even more likely, that it is Aunt Kate's mother with Aunt Kate as a a young lady and her sister. WE will have to keep working on this one!

In July we learned that Helen Gerber had gone to Heaven at the amazing age of 100. Helen and her sister Katherine made their home in Green Bay Wisconsin for many years. Helen Gerber was the daughter of Baltz and Katherine (Schuetz) Gerber. Baltz Gerber was the brother of Lena (Gerber) Hassler and Anton Gerber. Helen was a good, kind person and we all liked her very much. We would visit them at the Baltz Gerber home in Frazee Minnesota when we were kids. Post card photo of Helen Gerber

Today we'll continue with harvesting photos. This set of photos continue from last weeks August 1951 Threshing. The farmers worked very hard in those days, but the neighbors would help each other and so it was also a social time too, and lunch breaks were not only a time to eat and be refreshed, but also a time to talk and laugh. Photo #1: Shows some of the guys having lunch break. Grace Gerber, Joe Bogenschutz, Henry Steinbach, Francis Gerber and Anton Gerber. When the truck and wagon were full of grain sacks Grandpa Tony would set the sacks on the ground while the truck was being unloaded into the granary. The younger men would lift the heavy sacks of grain for him but he took great pride in running the sacker. Here is Joe Bogenschutz reclining on the sacks.

Moma was always lurking with her camera to get great pictures. Here she captured John Riestenberg sitting on grain sacks with coffee in hand. The cream can has ice cold water in it. A good view of the bagger can be seen in the background. It looks like the horse had a fly blanket on. I believe that the Riestenberg's and Gerbers owned a Threshing machine together.

It's harvest time 2009, so let's see some photos of how the Wheat, Oats and Barley and other grains were harvested many years ago. We'll do two weeks of pictures of threshing time. This week is from August 1951. Picture #1: shows the threshing machine with a rack of bundles ready to be put into the thresher. The men hooking up the belts are Francis Gerber, Joe Bogenschutz holding the belt, John Gerber and John Steinbach.

Happy Birthday Mama, who has been in heaven many years now. Our dear mother Dorothy (Hoffmann) Gerber was born July 9th, 1912 in New York. Many of you know that she was an orphan in the New York Foundling Hospital (Home) in New York city, which was located near Central Park. At the age of two years Dorothy "Roberts" came to Minnesota on one of the Orphan trains in 1914. John "Pops" Hoffmann and Bertha "Birdie" (Lein) Hoffmann had been accepted to take little Dorothy by the nuns, who ran the Foundling place in New York. John and Bertha also raised a little boy named "Francis. He was born in 1914. Sister Mary and I recently tried to get a birth certificate from Fergus Falls, but they had no record of Francis at all. We couldn't believe the news. Phil tried to obtain Francis' military record and that was denied too. So our dear uncle Francis is a mystery, but we do have pictures of Dorothy and Francis as little children. Photo #1: is little Dorothy not long after she came to live with the Hoffmann's in 1914.

Photo #3: is the Hoffmann children Francis and Dorothy. Mama told us about this photo. She said that Grandma Birdie dressed them up for the photo and told them that they could have chocolate covered raisins as a reward for posing for the picture. Little Francis is holding the candy and Mama is "Put Out" by having to wait so long to have the candy. Mama was two years older than Francis.

Last week we saw the Bogenschutz sisters float in the 4th of July Parade. They were the children of Christian and Mary (Mohr) Bogenschutz. This week let's go back in time to World War I. These photos were in Cecelia Bogenschutz's collection of pictures. Photo #1: Frances Bogenschutz was a nurse or Red Cross worker during World War I. Time has taken all the information about it, but this photo shows Frances in her uniform.

Time also has taken away what this large celebration was for. However it was World War I, and shows many of the ladies in the uniforms that Frances Bogenschutz wears in picture #1. Maybe this took place at Ada, Minnesota and maybe it was the 4th of July. I thought it was a very interesting photo.

I don't know if this photo is from the same celebration as picture #2 but it certainly is during World War I. The lady next to the man with the money bags is Frances Bogenschutz. Her brother Christian Bogenschutz Jr. served his country in World War I.

The two sisters owned and operated a millinary store in the town of Ada, Minnesota. There were sisters of my grandmother Annie (Bogenschutz) Gerber and sisters to Mary Lou Splett's grandmother Lena (Bogenschutz) Smithlin.

The school year is nearly over for 2009. Today let's go back in time and see some group pictures of children who attended the Rose Hill District 132 Country School. The school was located about a mile west and a quarter mile north of the Gerber farm. The school was high on a hill just north of the Riestenberg farm. Children of Rose Hill School 1918 or 1919. Adam Gerber son of Anton and Annie (Bogenschutz) Gerber is the first boy in the front row. Teacher was either Mary Schields or Dora Reibein that being 91 years ago.
