This weeks photo was supplied to us from the Marilyn B. collection and was the one used in the Martin family reunion display held this summer in July at Garrison, Minnesota. It is our Uncle Russel Martin The image used in the display was black and white so this is the color version of that photo used in the display. Russel was the youngest son of Lawrence and Frances Martin. He was well liked by everyone that met him. He was what I would call a people person. It is our Grand Mother Frances Martin. The image used in the display was black and white so this is the color version of that photo used in the display. Of the photos i have seen of Grandma this is one of my favorites. After Grandfather Lawrence passed away she was the person that kept in touch with everyone and was the head of the Martin family. It is our Grand Father Lawrence Martin and this photo I'm sure was also taken near the Martin apartment at 1915 2nd Avenue South, Minneapolis and may have been in the 1946 time frame when he celebrated his 70th birthday.

Aunt Donna Baillif told me that after they were living in River Falls Wisconsin that Grandpa had an offer to work for the railroad so that is how they came to south Minneapolis. He later worked as a detective for the Dyckman Hotel and later after having his strokes they kept him on as the freight elevator operator. I hope I have this right and if not please send me feedback. I've included a image of that hotel labeled 1947. I found this on the Minnesota Historical Museum site so they get the credit for this image.

This weeks photo was supplied to us from the Donna Baillif family photo collection and is the image that was used in the Martin Family Photo display at the reunion in July at Garrison Minnesota. This is the only picture I have ever seen of our Uncle Harold Martin so to say it has great meaning to me would be an understatement. It is the whole Martin family taken in the year 1929. A special thanks to Aunt Donna for the image and providing the information to make this photo possible. He was the second son of Lawrence and Frances Martin and was only 25 years old when he passed on due to a car accident. Harold Phillip Martin April 21, 1908 - August 12, 1933.

On Tuesday we attended the funeral for Uncle Rene' Baillif in Garrison, Minnesota. At the end of the services for Rene' the priest called on Ron Benson to deliver the tribute to Uncle Rene'. This tribute I have been told was gathered and assembled by Joy, Jeanette, Marilyn, Susan, and Vicky. It is a wonderful tribute to Uncle Rene' that I feel you all must see and enjoy as they did such a skillful job creating this tribute using all those memories that you folks contributed.

With the passing of our uncle Rene Baillif on Wednesday I wanted to share the obituary again and also a photo of Rene and Aunt Donna taken at the Martin Family Reunion in 1981. He was always smiling and always enjoyed talking to people. He loved to hear what everyone was up to. He was the type person that would give you the shirt off his back and I'm sure that happened many times during his stay on earth. We will missed him dearly!! Rene 'Rainy' Baillif GARRISON - Rene Louis " Rainy" Baillif, age 87, of Garrison, died on Sept. 23, 2009, at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. He was born on June 24, 1922, in Bloomington, Minn., to Charles and Lillian (Hogan) Baillif. He married Donna Rose Martin on Nov. 8, 1947, in Minneapolis. Rainy owned and operated R.L Baillif Construction for 50 years. He drove school bus for the Bloomington and Brainerd school districts for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Donna; three sons, Harold (Suzie) Baillif, Richard (Patti) Baillif, Paul (Mary) Baillif, all of Brainerd; two daughters, Susan (David) Bowman, of Hillsboro, N.C., Vicky (Bill) King, Deerwood; two brothers, Alfred (Shirley) Baillif, of Valley Center, Calif., Victor Baillif, of Burnsville, Minn.; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Heather Bowman; two brothers, Walter and Ernest Baillif. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the Garrison Community Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

The following is all information and images provided to us from Michelle R. commenting about the loss of our cousin Dale Mattson. In memory of Dale Mattson who passed away August 17th. This was taken on Mille Lacs at the house Larry rented for the family reunion. Dale was planning on coming but unable to that day, but he was able to be in this picture. I just love the picture because it is all of Larry's family with the exception of Jeremiah who stayed in California to keep an eye on the business. Larry has the nicest kids - and I know losing one of them was about the worse thing, I just can not imagine. Our Martin family sure has had some sadness over the recent years haven't we --but we can not dwell on that and have to live on the "good times". Dale is 5th from left in back.

Not only for the fallen soldiers but also for any person that has served our country so we may live in a free society. My one trip to Washington DC with brother Tom a few years ago and seeing Arlington Cemetery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Vietnam Memorial, Korean War Memorial and others has left a lasting impression with me so I will always respect those that serve when called. My mother Mary Jane (Martin) Estrem sitting on an older piece of farm machinery. Even though the image is somewhat beat up, I still like it very much. I'm once again will guess it was taken at the Marquardt farm in Wisconsin probably close to the same time frame of last weeks image of Tom Estrem by the wood pile. Approximately 1941 or 1942 as Tom already was wearing glasses at 18 months old.

I wanted to share this photo of our Grandmother Frances Martin. It was taken at the Estrem living room on University Avenue and the date on this photo was 1961 so I hope this is accurate. That TV in this image was our first black and white TV and was a Coranado brand. I also think mother and dad purchased it in 1948. Sure does bring back great memories to me of the start television.

I thought it would be nice to start this years images with another photo of our Martin Grandparents again. It is a very nice picture of both clearly showing their faces. The two kids in the background I will guess to be possibly Phil Estrem and it sure looks like it might be cousin Michelle Martin. Us cousins always like playing on that pipe fence whenever we visited with Grandpa and Grandma's apartment in south Minneapolis. It had a date of November 14, 1946.

This is in honor of our cousin Julia Evanson (Bell) NISSWA - Julia Evanson, age 41, of Nisswa, passed away Thursday night, Dec. 4, 2008, as a result of an automobile accident. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Salem Lutheran Church, 120 Archibald Road, Deerwood, Minn. Friends are welcome to gather from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter and also for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Bay Lake Township Cemetery. Julia Bell Evanson was born on Oct. 27, 1967, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Allen and Patricia (Vanda) Bell. She graduated from Burnsville High School and went on to cosmetology school. In 1993, she moved to the Brainerd lakes area. In September of 2003, she was united in marriage to Jeff Evanson. She was currently employed by Rels Title as a closing supervisor and she was in the banking and title insurance industry for the past 16 years. Being actively involved in the community, she was the committee chair for the Mid-Minnesota Builders Association, an active member of GLAR, a coach for local figure skating and volunteered for Special Olympics, the Camp Confidence fishing tournament at Ernie's on Gull and other local tourism events. Among the things she enjoyed most were spending time at the cabin on Bay lake, boating and ice fishing. Julia Evanson She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Bell; and twin nephews, Joshua and Jeremy Bell. Julia will be lovingly missed by her husband, Jeff, of Nisswa; father, Allen Bell, of Bay Lake; brother, Jon (Lisa) Bell; nephews, Josh and Andy, of Plymouth; Grandma Millie, of Brainerd; in-laws, Wally and Darlene Evanson, of Fargo, N.D., and Jason Evanson and family, Terri Corbo and family; aunt and uncle, Mike and Rayeanne Vanda; and cousins, Amy, Debi and Jenny. Julia was the most beautiful, kind-hearted woman and will be deeply missed by all. It is a picture showing our cousins Michelle and Madelon "Maggie" Martin with our uncle Jim Martin taken in California and I will guess it to be sometime in the late 1950's. Michelle added: I'm so bad with years and dates...so talked to my younger sister (laughing) Here is the information she e-mailed me tonight ------------------------- Maggie wrote in part: This was our childhood memory of travels with Dad. We took the train from Minnesota and it seemed like weeks we were on that train, remember I was working in the Club Car !!! We did spend the night in Las Vegas (Howdy Partner). This photo was taken in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. I have another picture in that exact same place with Cousin Terry Martin. I think I was about 7 years old, making you 10 -- so guessing Summer of 1954. Isn't it cute how we always dressed alike, kind of like twins.

It is a photo of one of her friends that lived in the apartment directly behind our grandparents apartment building on 1915 2nd Avenue South Minneapolis. I believe that Jean Cashman is a cousin to Aunt Donna but she will have to verify this to me. All three girls are wearing the same type socks.
