This weeks photo was supplied to us from the Marilyn B. collection and was the one used in the Martin family reunion display held this summer in July at Garrison, Minnesota. It is our Uncle Russel Martin The image used in the display was black and white so this is the color version of that photo used in the display. Russel was the youngest son of Lawrence and Frances Martin. He was well liked by everyone that met him. He was what I would call a people person. Whenever he was able to come back for a visit to Minnesota there was no lack of people and places to visit. Russel Paul Martin April 15, 1924 - February 7, 1995

The fall of 2009 had weather conditions that have not allowed the farmers to harvest their corn. We've seen many large fields of corn still standing when we traveled to Ottertail County this fall. Johnnie said that the corn may have to stay in the fields until spring. I loved corn fields as a child. Imagination could transform rows of corn into wonderful times of play. Sometimes I would pretend to be a general and the corn was my army. I would stomp along the outside row shouting orders and inspecting the "troops". One of daddies rules was that us kids could never go into a cornfield because you could get lost and it was hard to find you again. When Eisenhower was running for president I would pretend that I was running for president and I would go down the outside row of corn shaking the corn cobs and saying "Vote for me". I would give speeches too. But when I cut my hand on a sharp corn leaf I knew that I had lost the election to Eisenhower. Sometimes I would be the New Young Queen Elizabeth and the corn was my adoring subjects. Anyway today I'll feature some of our corn pictures of the past. Picture #1: Daddy (Al "Wishy" Gerber) showing Mary (Mary Gerber Graves) his corn.

Photo was supplied to us from Mary Jane Estrem's photo collection and was the one used in the Martin family reunion display held this summer in July at Garrison, Minnesota. It is our Grand Mother Frances Martin. The image used in the display was black and white so this is the color version of that photo used in the display. Of the photos i have seen of Grandma this is one of my favorites. After Grandfather Lawrence passed away she was the person that kept in touch with everyone and was the head of the Martin family. It is our Grand Father Lawrence Martin and this photo I'm sure was also taken near the Martin apartment at 1915 2nd Avenue South, Minneapolis and may have been in the 1946 time frame when he celebrated his 70th birthday.

Aunt Donna Baillif told me that after they were living in River Falls Wisconsin that Grandpa had an offer to work for the railroad so that is how they came to south Minneapolis. He later worked as a detective for the Dyckman Hotel and later after having his strokes they kept him on as the freight elevator operator. I hope I have this right and if not please send me feedback. I've included a image of that hotel labeled 1947. I found this on the Minnesota Historical Museum site so they get the credit for this image.

Another photo of Circle Montana taken on a visit that Rose and I took probably sometime in the 1970's. It is an image of the Chapin Drugstore where we stopped and visited with some of the folks that were related to the Estrem's. Two of the Estrem brothers lived in that area. I believe it was Lars and Anfin Estrem. One of those two brothers never married so he left no descendants to carry on the Estrem name.

This weeks photo was supplied to us from the Donna Baillif family photo collection and is the image that was used in the Martin Family Photo display at the reunion in July at Garrison Minnesota. This is the only picture I have ever seen of our Uncle Harold Martin so to say it has great meaning to me would be an understatement. It is the whole Martin family taken in the year 1929. A special thanks to Aunt Donna for the image and providing the information to make this photo possible. He was the second son of Lawrence and Frances Martin and was only 25 years old when he passed on due to a car accident. Harold Phillip Martin April 21, 1908 - August 12, 1933.

Photo of Circle Montana taken on a visit that Rose and I took probably sometime in the 1970's. It is an image of the Gladstone Hotel - Motel. I did do a search on the internet after last weeks posting of the Chevrolet garage and there is a picture of this same Gladstone Hotel but it looks like it is in need of repair and paint. I still think it would be interesting to see the town of Circle today. It also would be of interest to me to know the age of many of the buildings still standing.

Photo of Circle Montana taken on a visit that Rose and I took probably sometime in the 1970's. It is an image of the Chevrolet Garage. The name on the sign when this picture was taken is McFarland This probably is the same garage mentioned in this reply from Roger and Pat Estrem. Hi, Roger wants to let you know who the man and woman are: the man is Ed Elverude and his wife, Blanche. I'm not sure of the spelling for their last name. Maryann and Anna were married to Jay and Ray Elverude (brothers) respectively. Ed's father is Jay. Jay owned the Chevrolet dealership in Circle, Montana. It was named Inland Chevrolet. We have a yardstick from there hanging at home. Ed operated the dealership after his father's death. Kim is the son of Ed and Blanche, married a southern girl and we had dinner at their home many years ago in Minneapolis. I would like to take a trip back to Circle Montana again to see how much this town has changed. I do have a few more photos from that trip that are available. I also remember stopping and talking to the folks in the drugstore that we are related to the Estrem's but I do not remember their names now. The drugstore was a typical drugstore complete with what we called a soda fountain and the round stools next to the counter. It so reminded me of Schneider Drugstore on University Avenue where my mother worked at for so many years.

This past week (Oct 6-9) cousin John and Annette Farrell came from Indiana to Minnesota for a visit with Mary, Johnnie and I. We had a wonderful time as their last visit to Minnesota was in 1966. They brought pictures from their collection and Phil scanned them on the computer so we now have 85 more amazing pictures to share on the weekly mailing. The weather was unseasonably cool and now we have snow on the ground and 27 degrees. John and Annette headed out for Indiana on early Friday morning and Saturday morning we woke up to two inches of snow and 25 degrees. Yikes!!!! October in Minnesota brings the colorful leaves of fall. It also is time for Rose and I to split and haul in the wood to the barn for the winter supply. We burn wood in our Wilkening fireplace almost every day so we do go through a goodly amount each season. This is a photo of Rose helping me haul in the wood from the woods this spring 6/2009. This spring was an amazing spring with the cooler temperatures that kept the bugs down long enough for us to work at this project to the finish line. Now we are splitting a couple trailer loads each Sunday with the help of Rose's brother, John Gerber and then it is unload directly to the barn where it is stored until used this winter. Fall is one of my favorite seasons!

On Tuesday we attended the funeral for Uncle Rene' Baillif in Garrison, Minnesota. At the end of the services for Rene' the priest called on Ron Benson to deliver the tribute to Uncle Rene'. This tribute I have been told was gathered and assembled by Joy, Jeanette, Marilyn, Susan, and Vicky. It is a wonderful tribute to Uncle Rene' that I feel you all must see and enjoy as they did such a skillful job creating this tribute using all those memories that you folks contributed.

September 30th is our dear daddy Al "Wishy" Gerber's birthday. He would have been 98 years old, of course he is in heaven now. Daddy loved hunting and fishing in all the seasons of Minnesota. He especially enjoyed sharing hunting and fishing adventures with his father-in-law John "Pops" Hoffmann. We miss daddy and mama and all those wonderful people who are in heaven now. With the passing of our uncle Rene Baillif on Wednesday I wanted to share the obituary again and also a photo of Rene and Aunt Donna taken at the Martin Family Reunion in 1981. He was always smiling and always enjoyed talking to people. He loved to hear what everyone was up to. He was the type person that would give you the shirt off his back and I'm sure that happened many times during his stay on earth. We will missed him dearly!! (For the Estrem Family photo list): Uncle Rene was married to Donna. Aunt Donna was a Martin sibling and is Mary Jane's youngest sister. Aunt Donna is the only surviving member of the Lawrence & Frances Martin Family. Some of you might have met Rene & Donna in the past and I wanted to be sure you heard about his passing. Rene 'Rainy' Baillif GARRISON - Rene Louis " Rainy" Baillif, age 87, of Garrison, died on Sept. 23, 2009, at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. He was born on June 24, 1922, in Bloomington, Minn., to Charles and Lillian (Hogan) Baillif. He married Donna Rose Martin on Nov. 8, 1947, in Minneapolis. Rainy owned and operated R.L Baillif Construction for 50 years. He drove school bus for the Bloomington and Brainerd school districts for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Donna; three sons, Harold (Suzie) Baillif, Richard (Patti) Baillif, Paul (Mary) Baillif, all of Brainerd; two daughters, Susan (David) Bowman, of Hillsboro, N.C., Vicky (Bill) King, Deerwood; two brothers, Alfred (Shirley) Baillif, of Valley Center, Calif., Victor Baillif, of Burnsville, Minn.; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Heather Bowman; two brothers, Walter and Ernest Baillif. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the Garrison Community Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.
